ESSENTIAL # 1:
PRAYER AND
RESEARCH
PRAYER
Prayer is the essential starting point when building a new YoungLives ministry, and it remains
crucial throughout the journey. Establishing a prayer strategy and inviting supporters to join
ensures a foundation that softens hearts toward teenage parents, unites people from diverse
backgrounds, and sparks passion and vision for the ministry. Numerous stories from YoungLives
ministries highlight how prayer not only initiates but sustains their work. Prayer is the best way to
develop a core team of people who will care for, talk about, and serve in YoungLives. There is no set
timeline for this Essential; some ministries begin actively after a short period of prayer, while
others spend years in prayer before launching direct ministry.
Shared here are ideas to help you create an intentional prayer strategy:
Do you have a small prayer team (selected from close friends, possibly family members, fellow
staff or leaders, donors, etc.) with whom you regularly share where you need prayer?
Does your area committee have a prayer coordinator who calls for prayer meetings, organizes a
prayer chain in critical situations, keeps area concerns before the committee, etc.?
How will you take advantage of our missionwide Prayer Day in October?
Will you make time for prayer at every team meeting and leadership meeting?
How will you make your personal prayer list and keep it
