HOW TO USE
THIS HANDBOOK
This handbook is a guide for anyone interested in starting a YoungLives (mom or dad) ministry or
currently leading a YoungLives (mom or dad) ministry.
If you are reading this for the first time and are praying about starting a new YoungLives
ministry, take courage. We are not going into uncharted waters, but we are going where God’s
heart is. This is His work — not ours!
If you are reading this for the 500th time, you’re doing great work! Thank you for your
faithfulness.
Most importantly to all of you, rest assured that you are not alone. You will be connected with
people who will provide you with support, training, encouragement, and direction. You are joining
a community that is committed to carrying the hope of Jesus to all kids. Thank you for sharing in
the vision to reach parenting adolescents and see generations forever changed.

If you are just starting a ministry, some of the 10 essentials described here will overlap with each
other or happen simultaneously, but they have been placed in this order for a reason. Direct
ministry with teenage parents (including contact work, club, camp, and discipleship) should not
begin until the foundation of ministry is built. Direct ministry is exciting, and it can be tempting
to focus on meeting young parents before completing the required groundwork. However,
building a clear plan and support team first will help to prevent setbacks down the road.
