DISCIPLESHIP METHODS
The following discusses some of the discipleship methods that YoungLives areas use to help
participants begin to grow in and walk out their faith. Each of these methods has the goal of
teaching and reinforcing the Core Discipleship Values of Self, Child, Relationships and World.
YoungLives Campaigners
Campaigners groups usually meet once or twice a month. These meetings can also accommodate
childcare needs and provide a meal or a snack.
Tips for an Effective Campaigners
Discussion-Oriented: Ensure that the study is discussion-oriented, encouraging participants
to do most of the talking. Prepare mentors to avoid filling in silence with their comments.
Inquisitive Approach: Rather than telling, ask. Teenagers are more likely to remember
insights they come up with themselves. Use open-ended questions to steer clear of simple
"yes" or "no" answers.
Active Listening: Practice active listening by echoing what a participant has said to confirm it
has been heard, fostering a supportive environment.
Relevant Topics: Choose discussion topics that are relevant to their lives and explore these
topics from a biblical perspective.
Mentor Training: Train mentors thoroughly to lead Campaigners groups effectively.
Encourage them to participate actively and set them up for success by having them observe
experienced leaders and prepare lessons under guidance.
Develop Peer Leaders: Encourage and train maturing teen parents to lead studies as they
step into roles as junior mentors and peer leaders.
Prayer: Incorporate prayer into meetings to foster a spiritual grounding and connection
among participants.
Example Campaigner Curriculum
Church
Effective discipleship includes plugging teen parents into a place where they can have long-term
growth after their involvement with YoungLives is over. As your Campaigner participants begin to
grow in their personal relationships with Christ, emphasize how important it is for them to be
connected with a church. Help them to find a church home where they feel comfortable and
welcomed. Key features to consider in potential churches are well-run childcare, small groups,
culturally relevant services, and access to transportation. Saturday night or late Sunday morning
services are helpful for young families.
