ESSENTIAL # 2:
YOUNGLIVES
MINISTRY STRUCTURE
The majority of YoungLives ministries are a part of or within an existing Young Life area. However,
if there is not yet Young Life in the area, YoungLives may begin as a stand-alone ministry
becoming the lead Young Life ministry in a community. As you begin the YoungLives ministry,
there are two essential questions to consider:
Will YoungLives be with an existing Young Life area or a stand-alone ministry?
Who will be the direct supervisor for the YoungLives coordinator?
WITHIN AN EXISTING MINISTRY
If Young Life is already operating in the community where YoungLives is starting, the YoungLives
ministry should exist within that area and come under the leadership of the local area director and
existing Young Life committee. Data shows this model ensures sustainability.
The YoungLives Coordinator within an existing ministry follows the YoungLives Coordinator job
description and reports directly to the Young Life area director and should be included in area meetings
and leadership proportional to her allotted hours.
Benefits:
The area director and coordinator can collaborate to set a unified vision and goals.
Donors are approached by a cohesive ministry rather than separate programs.
New churches, foundations, and individuals may be more interested in partnering with an area that
includes ministry to adolescent parents.
Young Life can expand its influence within the mission community through new partnerships,
additional advocates, and a larger volunteer pool.
Administrative responsibilities can be shared.
Young Life leader training can include both Young Life leaders and YoungLives mentors, fostering a
stronger sense of belonging for everyone.
